General News: Global Television to launch in high definition in Calgary and Edmonton

Global Calgary and Global Edmonton will launch in High Definition this June, joining Global BC, Global Ontario and CHCH. With these additional two HD transmitters, Canwest now has more stations broadcasting in High Definition than any other Canadian English broadcast group.

General News: Rogers files complaint against CTV for breach of public trust

Rogers today, along with Bell, Telus, Cogeco, Eastlink and the Canadian Cable Systems Alliance Inc. (CCSA), filed a complaint with the CRTC that CTV has violated the Broadcasting Act by airing one-sided and unbalanced coverage of its own advocacy campaign.

CTV Montreal is inviting its viewers to a public open house this Saturday, May 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in support of local television. The public is invited to tour CTV Montreal’s facilities and meet on-air personalities including Mutsumi Takahashi, Todd van der Heyden and Lori Graham. The Open House is part of a nation-wide day of action by CTV and ‘A’ stations from coast-to-coast to raise awareness on the crisis facing local TV in Canada.

The Fresh TV Inc. hit show, 6TEEN, has won a Pulcinella Award from Italy’s Cartoons on the Bay International Television and Multimedia Animation Festival. The tween cartoon that follows the lives of a group of 16-year-old friends was selected as the Best TV Series for the Tween Generation by the international jury. The annual awards ceremony took place on April 5, 2009 in Rapallo, Italy.

General News: Canwest Global Communications Corp. Reports Second Quarter 2009 Results

Canwest Global Communications Corp. (“Canwest” or the “Company”) today reported for the three months ended February 28, 2009 revenues of $637 million compared to $701 million for the same period last year. Operating profit(1) before restructuring and impairment expenses was $75 million for the second quarter, a decline of 31% compared to $109 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2008.
